We'll Always Have Paris

Summary

The West Virginia Division of Culture and History closes out its month of classic films with the 1951 Gene Kelly musical "An American in Paris." Named to the top 100 films of the past 100 years by the American Film Institute, the musical also won six of the eight Academy Awards for which it was nominated in 1952, including best picture, best music, best cinematography and best writing.

Full of fun quotes ("I'm a concert pianist. That's a pretentious way of saying I'm unemployed at the moment.") and memorable songs ("I Got Rhythm"), it's the story of a struggling American painter in Paris (Kelly) who gets "discovered" by an influential heiress with an eye for more than his art, but he falls instead for a young woman (Leslie Caron) already engaged to someone else. The free film will screen at 1 and 4 p.m. Saturday in the Cultural Center Theater at the state Capitol Complex. Call 558-0162.
