FORTY YEARS AGO, it was not unusual for a high school football coach to arrive unannounced at Laidley Field, take a seat in the bleachers and check out the Charleston High Mountain Lions. Coaches of that era marveled at the Mountain Lions' hard-hitting tackling techniques and believed they might learn a few things or maybe even steal a few secrets by observing a CHS practice.

Out on the field, head coach Frank Vincent would take notice of the visiting coaches but never seemed to mind their presence and never discouraged what essentially were spy missions. If anything, Vincent seemed complimented that area coaches wanted to watch.
