MOST American military recruits are good-hearted youths with no desire for violence. But the government trains them to kill, then sends them into nightmare war zones where death and horror abound. Often, the enemy is invisible amid the surrounding civilian population, so U.S. soldiers are in constant peril. Many see their friends killed or maimed.
