Dear Savvy Senior: My wife and I pay $300 a month for prescriptions, and we simply can't afford to keep it up. Even with the new Medicare drug benefit, I will still end up paying a lot, out of pocket, for medications. My question is this: Why are drugs so expensive in this country versus Canada or Europe? Dear Medicated: Great question! One of the key reasons drug prices in the United States are the most expensive in the world is because every developed country, except the U.S., regulates the prices that drug makers can charge consumers.
