Summary


Summer. Hot dogs. Relish. Sweet pickle relish gets used in a host of dishes, sometimes with controversy (egg salad springs to mind), but for hot dogs, it's de rigeur-if you can use such a fancy term for this homespun mix of cucumbers pickled in vinegar, corn syrup and assorted spices.

The Chicago Tribune test kitchen crew tried nine varieties and tasted them straight from the jar and, of course, on a hot dog with a bun. The tasting failed to reveal an overwhelming winner - 5 is average and the winning score was 5.2. But because few people make relish at home, the supermarket is the destination of choice.
