HUNTINGTON - Gov. Joe Manchin wants the coal industry to have the same type of federal protection the steel industry received from the Bush administration earlier this decade.

By placing tariffs on imported coal the next time its prices plunge, the U.S. mining industry could compete against inexpensive imports and survive until coal prices rise again, Manchin said this week during the National Governors Association annual winter meeting in Washington, D.C.
