A recent query on one of my favorite food and fitness Web sites asked readers what foods made them think of springtime. Asparagus immediately sprang to my mind. While the green spears are available year-round in grocery stores, they don't compare to the stalks cut fresh from local gardens in the season.

As a child, my springtime plate contained tender spears from my parents' backyard garden. I still associate asparagus with the little corner market near my first apartment. The little store carried lots of local produce that was only available in season. Asparagus' arrival truly heralded spring.

In my early attempts at cooking asparagus, I'm sure I was guilty of overcooking those crispy spears into a sodden mush. Today, my favorite asparagus prep is to toss the spears with olive oil, kosher salt and pepper and roast them in a hot (450 ) oven for 10 to 15 minutes, depending on their thickness, so their green color intensifies and they take on nutty flavor.
