Exhausted and bleary-eyed after the Normandy invasion in June 1944, the general yearned for just one night of pure, solid sleep. "He hadn't slept for four days. I hadn't slept for a couple of days. His aide set up a tent and wanted me to sit at the base of a big tree and watch that tent. He told me not to take my eyes off the tent."

He sat obediently under that tree through the long night while Maj. Gen. Matthew Ridgway slept. "The next morning, General Ridgway came out and took his canteen and poured some water in his helmet and shaved. He was probably the only man in the Normandy beachhead who shaved."
