If you are a smoker, then you have three problems right now. The first is a serious one: Nicotine is a highly addictive drug. Why is nicotine so addictive? It's because nicotine rewires your brain. Once rewired, your brain feels bad without nicotine.

Nicotine mimics a neurotransmitter in your brain called acetylcholine. To your neurons, nicotine looks like a surge of acetylcholine. This surge causes a release of dopamine, which is pleasant and feels good. The surge of dopamine is the reason people enjoy smoking.
