Summary


IF there was any doubt that, from the Legislature's perspective, the first and paramount goal of redistricting is self-preservation, House Speaker Rick Thompson's response to the lawsuits now pending in the state Supreme Court removed it.

The response makes note that an alternative 100 single-member district plan offered by one of the petitioners, Thornton Cooper, is actually much closer to having ideally proportionate districts, with much smaller population deviations among districts (ranging from minus-3.99 percent to plus-3.5 percent) than the House plan (with deviations of minus 5 percent to 4.99 percent).
