When it comes to ESPN's quickly approaching NFL exhibition schedule, the injured list for announcers seems nearly as active as the one for the players.

Clarksburg native Mike Patrick has been calling games for ESPN since 1987, but recent discomfort during a round of golf led to the discovery that the Washington Irving High School grad needs open- heart surgery. Patrick will miss ESPN's four NFL preseason broadcasts, but should be ready to return in time for the network's first regular-season Sunday night telecast Sept. 12.
