Charleston police officers search a car that was ditched in a small parking lot on Edgewood Drive near Cato Park on the city's West Side around 8:30 a.m. Monday. The driver of a red Chevrolet Monte Carlo sped through the school zone in front of Stonewall Jackson Middle School and then attempted to evade police, abandoning his vehicle and fleeing on foot.
Sgt. T.B. Ranson, who was conducting an extra patrol on the West Side hill, saw the car and yelled for the suspect to stop. The driver - described as a "stocky" black man wearing black pants and a black shirt - fled on foot.
