Horribly, 533,000 more American jobs were lost in November - the worst month since 1974 - bringing the 2008 wipeout to nearly 2 million so far. Day after day, more floundering firms announce layoffs. The U.S. economic crisis is inflicting severe pain on multitudes of families dumped into limbo.

Even in the thriving coal business, Alpha Natural Resources said Wednesday it will close a Preston County mine and put 329 West Virginians out of work. On the same day, Greif Inc. said it will shutter its Culloden packaging plant and lay off 41 West Virginians. Losses pile atop losses. On Thursday, AT&T announced a 12,000 cutback, and DuPont sliced 2,500.
