IN THE late 19th century, the American marketplace was dominated by anti-competitive, anti-consumer trusts such as Carnegie (steel), Rockefeller (oil), Armour (meatpacking). For good reason, Presidents Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson pushed reforms that busted the trusts and steered the American economy in a competitive direction that delivered better value, service and choices to consumers.
The same free-market model is the American ideal today, and the airline industry is a perfect example of a marketplace in which consumers win in spades when vigorous head-to-head competition is at work.
