UNFORTUNATELY, there's a simplistic streak in America that defines patriotism only as support for war - any war declared by Washington politicians. For example, this shallow viewpoint considers you a patriot if you endorse President Bush's unnecessary Iraq invasion. But it doubts your loyalty if you don't.
Even worse, this brand of militaristic patriotism can include irrational thinking and mislabeling of foreigners. Commonly, its adherents say the Iraq attack was necessary because of "what they did to us on 9/11." But this makes no sense, because Iraq had no connection to the historic suicide terrorism of Sept. 11, 2001.
