Since the Charleston Civic Center opened nearly three decades ago, the notion has persisted that it's a difficult place to shoot a basketball, that its spaciousness is a shock to players accustomed to small gyms.

For at least the first half of West Virginia State's 86-74 quarterfinal victory over Pitt Johnstown Thursday, the notion made sense. It certainly made sense to Yellow Jackets guard Darren Jones, who recalled his team's shocking quarterfinal loss to Wheeling Jesuit last year.
