Jerry O. Akers, 72, of Chesapeake passed away December 20, 2009, at CAMC Memorial Hospital after a long illness.He was born March 11, 1938, and was a son of the late Otis and Anna Akers. He was preceded in death by brothers, Tommy and Roy Akers; and brother-in-law, Alan Browning.He was a retired coal miner from the UMWA after 32 years' service.Jerry is survived by his wife of 18 years, Valerie Akers; daughter and son in law, Robin and Jamie Osborne of Hillard, Ohio; daughter and fiance, LouAnn Graupmann and Jeff Vogelsong of Dayton, Ohio; daughter and son-in-law, Tina and Mike McCann of Paintsville, Ky.; daughter, Christy Akers of Pennsylvania; son, Roger Paxton of South Charleston; sister, Rita Browning of South Charleston; brother and sister-in-law; John and Nell Akers of Chesapeake; sister-in- law, Maxine Akers of Chesapeake; nine grandchildren and one great- grandchild; and numerous nieces and nephews.Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, December 23, at Pryor Funeral Home with the Rev. Randy Camp officiating. Backus, 92, of Mount Nebo died Sunday, December 20, 2009, at his home.He was the son of the late Blume Field and Mary Belle Graham Backus and was born in Mount Nebo on February 4,1917.He was the co-owner of the Mount Nebo General Store for 35 years, a member of Gilgal United Methodist Church and a U.S. Army veteran of WWII.He was preceded in death by his wife, Macel Hughes Backus, in 2006.Surviving: a son, Dencil Backus of McDonald, Pa.; two daughters, Sharon B.
