Independence Day is a celebration of American pride and heritage. For many West Virginians, it means recognizing the citizenship they have held all their lives. But not all Americans are born American. For some, the fireworks and festivities on the Fourth of July are the mark of a new life in a new country. These five women came to West Virginia from all over the world. They started careers, raised families, and built new lives for themselves. Each had different reasons for coming, and each encountered different struggles and joys once she arrived. But all found communities, friends, families, and futures that made them want to stay and become American citizens.
