Msha Backs Consultant's Hiring

Summary


A federal mine safety official told U.S. Sen. Robert C. Byrd on Friday the federal Department of Labor is not circumventing the Senate by hiring President Bush's mine safety head nominee as a consultant.

Byrd has blocked the confirmation of Richard Stickler, Bush's nominee to head the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration, for months because of concerns that the Bush administration is insufficiently dedicated to mine safety.
