Mother, Son Plead Guilty to Black Lung Check Scam

A mother and son from McDowell County pleaded guilty in federal court Tuesday to illegally cashing black lung survivor benefits checks for almost 10 years, the U.S. Attorney's Office announced.

Connie S. Martin, 66, and John M. Martin, 39, both of Premier, admitted that they continued to cash benefit checks issued by the Department of Labor to Connie Martin's mother after her death in May 1997, the news release states.
