Montgomery Voters Keep Their Mayor

Summary

MONTGOMERY - Voters in this town on the Kanawha-Fayette county line agreed to keep their first woman mayor in office in Tuesday's election.

Melba Lou White received 207 votes to keep her job. Fred Lockard Jr., a former member of council, received 148 votes, and Charleston businessman Hershel Layne received 60 votes in the mayor's race. Ballot counters had problems Tuesday night, and the results did not come in until after midnight. Apparently one or more counters lost their place during the counting, and the counting had to start over.
