Summary
I applaud the steps that have been taken over the past month to more closely scrutinize mountaintop-removal coal extraction. While the Friends of Coal and many politicians are going to go on record screaming bloody murder for the coal industry, we know that it has survived worse challenges than this. After all, West Virginia is still standing even after new mountaintop removal operations have been held up for the past 18 months.
The coal industry will continue to mine coal without using mountaintop-removal methods and communities around the mines will continue to push for more responsible mining and greater protections for their land, air and water. What we absolutely must ensure, though, is that, instead of expending energy attempting to protect and sustain the most highly destructive method of extracting coal, we should rather take advantage of this historic opportunity to diversify the economy of the coal-producing areas of our state.See the full content of this document
