Kanawha Commission Proposes Fund for Mine-Disaster Families

Kanawha County commissioners are urging state lawmakers to set up a fund to pay immediate benefits to families of miners killed in mine accidents.

Commissioners Dave Hardy and Kent Carper voted to adopt a resolution at a regular meeting Thursday urging legislators to adopt a West Virginia Fallen Miners Survivors Benefits Act to help the widows and families of miners killed in disasters like the fatal explosion of the Upper Big Branch Mine, which killed 29 miners. Funding for the act would come from a portion of coal severance money that coal companies pay.
