Imf to Loan Ukraine $16.5b to Boost Economy

WASHINGTON - Seeking to combat a spreading global financial crisis, the International Monetary Fund said Sunday it had reached a tentative agreement to provide Ukraine with $16.5 billion in loans over the next two years.

The decision, which will be subject to approval by the IMF's executive board, was announced by IMF Managing Director Dominique Strauss-Kahn, who stressed that the 185-nation lending agency will act quickly to supply assistance.
