In 1990, after several days in Mexico, I boarded a bus in Calexico, Calif. Shortly after entering I-8, the bus pulled over. Two armed men in dark green uniforms, one obviously an Anglo like me, the other apparently Hispanic, entered the bus and came down the aisle. Speaking Spanish in elevated voices, they declared themselves to be immigration officers and demanded everyone show ID. I was reaching for mine when they bustled right past.
