Summary


David Porter, the West Virginia Symphony's principal trumpeter, is a fine player - in just about any genre. His bluesy solo Friday night at the start the orchestra's pops concert "Symphony Idol" nearly derailed the proceedings.

He set the stage for Micah Atkinson's singing, as the first contestant, of Etta James' blues number, "In Heaven." His solo was hot and gritty, and there just wasn't any way that the 18-year-old Atkinson could match that type of mastery. So, even though she has a fine voice, she did not have the combination of vocal elasticity and rhythmic displacement needed for the blues.
