FAIRMONT - The toot-toot-tooting of a northern saw-whet owl droned into the night sky from a recording being played on a boom box placed near a series of mist nets on a north-facing ridge at Valley Falls State Park.

A group of 14 park visitors clutching flashlights or wearing battery-powered headlamps followed Joey Herron along the drier half of a seldom-traveled dirt road past the disc player to a mist net in which a tiny northern saw-whet owl was entangled.
