Flag and Country: ; Veterans Gather for Annual Tribute at Putnam County Courthouse

Summary

Putnam County hosted its second annual Veterans Appreciation Day on Nov. 8. Veterans and their families, and a few service men and women on active duty, gathered on a sunny afternoon behind the county courthouse. The event included music from the Winfield High School Band and a History of Flags program presented by Winfield American Legion Post 187. A C-130 transport aircraft from the 130th Airlift Wing of the W.Va. Air National Guard did a special flyover during the tribute. The keynote speaker was Hershel Woodrow Woody Williams of Ona, who was awarded the Medal of Honor for his service as a Marine demolition sergeant in 1945 during fighting at the island of Iwo Jima.
