The Few and the Many: ; Book Banning Doesn't Make Sense

Summary


The American Civil Liberties Union of West Virginia recognizes the free speech right of the individuals who object to Pat Conroy's books "Beach Music" and "Prince of Tides" to speak out about their objections to the books. But while we respect their right to express their views about the books, we deplore their efforts to impose their own beliefs upon all students whose teachers may assign books they find disturbing.

Citizens should be concerned about efforts to ban any texts based upon the complaints of a few who assert that parents' fundamental right and duty to provide for their children's education includes the right to censor books adopted by well-qualified and knowledgeable faculty for inclusion in the curriculum.
