Summary


THE CURRENT Foreign Policy magazine reprints an eerie echo from the past. It's a secret 1967 CIA report titled "Implications of an Unfavorable Outcome in Vietnam." However, Kurt Campbell and Shawn Brimley of the Center for a New American Security made a chilling point by substituting "Iraq" for "Vietnam" throughout. The four- decade-old warning fits today's situation well. Sample:

"The failure of American policy in Vietnam [Iraq] would have repercussions worldwide; it cannot be thought of merely as a local or even as a regional event. This is so, not only because world attention has been so intensively focused on the drama of Vietnam [Iraq] for so long, but even more importantly, because the United States is involved."
