THE energy bill being considered in Congress could have some unintended consequences. Members of emergency medical services agencies across West Virginia have serious concerns about this well- intentioned but misguided attempt to impose strict fuel standards on the ambulances, trucks and SUVs necessary for EMS work.
We are troubled by the economic effects this legislation could have on member agencies of the West Virginia EMS Coalition. EMS squads in this state already struggle to finance their lifesaving services. Many people incorrectly assume that ambulance services receive government funding like other first-response providers, such as fire and police departments. However, in West Virginia, very few ambulance agencies receive any direct government funding, and those that get taxpayer support still must rely heavily on other revenue sources to complete their budgets.See the full content of this document
