More than 60 years ago, Lufawn Slider rented a house along Coonskin Drive, and later spent 13 years a stone's throw up the road building his dream home - a brick rancher with hardwood floors, Douglas fir joists and rafters and a built-in vacuum system perched on seven acres.

"I've been here since 1947," he said. "I've watched them build the park, the airport and the armory."

During that time, he's also watched the West Virginia National Guard buy a lot of property from his neighbors.

"Since I've moved here, they've bought 16 houses between me and the park," he said.
