JOHN Kerry struck all the right notes in his concession speech Wednesday afternoon. There are no losers in an American election, he said, because when we wake up next morning, we are all still Americans. He exhorted his followers to work with him to heal the divisions in the country. "In the days ahead, we must find common cause," he said. "We must join in common effort, without remorse or recrimination, without anger or rancor."
It was a study in political grace, and also an enormous challenge. Anger and rancor characterized the recent campaign, and little of it originated in the Democratic camp. We can only pray that President Bush will do likewise.
