C-Usa Keeping an Eye On Hawaii

Summary

Conference USA teams such as Marshall may have a vested interest in the football success this season at Hawaii. With the Silicon Valley Football Classic folding, the Western Athletic Conference has only two bowl slots - the Hawaii Bowl and the MPC Computers Bowl. Since 2002, Hawaii has played in three straight Sheraton Hawaii Bowls and only had to be bowl-eligible to be guaranteed a slot. But WAC members voted in the spring to give their two bowl slots to the league's top two finishers.

C-USA has a slot in the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl, but the future economic stability of that game without the Rainbow Warriors playing in it is shaky at best. The Aloha and Oahu Bowls have already been scrapped due to lack of attendance and lack of local interest in Hawaii-based bowls featuring only teams from the mainland. Hawaii is picked third in this year's WAC preseason poll, behind co-favorites Boise State and Fresno State.
