Parents have the right to teach their children as they please. But they don't have the power to infringe on the privileges provided by the First Amendment. The U.S. Constitution protects all speech, even though some people might find certain ideas objectionable. Ironically, Pat Conroy is extremely powerful and eloquent and his work should be mandatory reading. The English students at Nitro High School have a legal right to expand their literary knowledge. Now, though, they have a much greater obligation - to stand up and help protect the freedoms of all others and particularly their essential right of free speech.
