MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The Alabama Legislature encouraged state mining officials Thursday to conduct timely inspections to make sure the state's coal mines are safe, but there was no move to suspend mining and take extra safety steps, as was done in West Virginia.
An official with the United Mine Workers of America said he favors temporarily shutting down Alabama mines to make sure they are safe. Thirteen miners, including three men from West Virginia, died in an explosion at an Alabama mine four years ago.See the full content of this document
