Accident Cost Wheeling-Pitt $23 Million

WHEELING - Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel Corp. warned Monday that it expects to take a $23 million hit to its fourth-quarter earnings because of an accident that shut down a furnace for 12 days in December.

Company officials did not say how much profit they will report when results are released March 14, but net income is likely to be a fraction of the $35.6 million Wheeling-Pitt made in the third quarter of 2004.
