Mention the Fayette County town of Thurmond to anyone interested in West Virginia history, and often they will delight in telling you about the infamous railroad town in the New River Gorge. For generations, Thurmond has occupied the center stage in the history of the coal mining boom of the early 20th century.

This postcard circa 1907 shows what would be main street in an ordinary community, but in Thurmond was the main line of the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway, which provided the principal access to Thurmond and its reason for being.
