A coal-fired electric power plant turns the sunshine of a million years ago into the electricity that powers our modern civilization. It's virtually a miracle when you think about it, but it's something we take for granted - until the lights go out, that is.

This photo of the Cabin Creek power plant dates from 1950 but the plant, which was the oldest major generating plant in the Appalachian system, was built in 1914.
