In 1909 the Elk River Oil and Gas Co. discovered oil in the Falling Branch Creek area along the Elk River. In the next few years more than a dozen fields were found, eventually leading to an astounding 1,000 wells being drilled.
Wells were drilled all over the Blue Creek drainage and downriver in the Pinch area. Refineries were built near Clendenin, which became a boomtown.See the full content of this document
