The Idiot Box: ; Globes Not so Golden for Average Joe
The Golden Globes air at 8 p.m. Sunday on NBC, but if you're just an average Joe TV viewer with basic cable, there's not much to get excited about. Premium cable networks (HBO, Showtime) are always well represented when it comes to Golden Globe nominations, but this year, they have more than usual. Of the 55 nominations in the 11 TV categories, 31 are from either HBO or Showtime productions.

First in State: ; Uc Opens Addiction Health-Care Clinic
For people grappling with substance abuse, basic health care can be fraught with worry: over-the-counter cough medicine can have relapse-triggering amounts of alcohol, and visits to the dentist are hazardous if they include narcotic painkillers. A new outpatient clinic at the University of Charleston, likely the first of its kind in the state, hopes to make those anxious decisions easier when it opens later this month.
Paperwork Error Delays Action On Smoking Complaints
It could be months now before a Kanawha County bar or gambling parlor gets convicted of violating the county's expanded smoking ban. The Kanawha-Charleston Health Department has been forced to refile criminal complaints against six businesses, after an assistant Kanawha County prosecutor notified the agency that the paperwork wasn't filled out properly.
Marshall University President Stephen Kopp will get a $42,220 raise under a contract approved Wednesday by the state's Higher Education Policy Commission, a boost two commissioners say is unfair in light of staff salaries there. At a brief meeting by conference call, commissioners voted 7-2 to approve the compensation package, which will bring Kopp's base salary to $275,000.
Although the Goody's store along Corridor G will close as part of a national liquidation, Dudley Farms Plaza is fully occupied and West Virginia retailers are thriving while those in other states struggle, shopping center managers say. Steve Andes, manager of Goody's at Dudley Farms, said he notified workers there of the impending closure shortly after he got the news from corporate headquarters in a conference call Monday.
