Christ Church Um to Host Holiday Festival This Weekend
cthomas@cnpapers.com 304-348-1232 Every other year, Christ Church United Methodist on Charleston's East End celebrates Epiphany with the centuries-old Boar's Head and Yule Log Festival.
Danielle Spencer, a senior at Berea (Ky.) College, will travel to Ghana in January, participating in a course related to African culture and religion. Her previous studies abroad include excursions to Germany, Poland, the Czech Republic, Oxford University in England and the University of Dublin in Ireland.
Memorial Ice Arena Offering Skating Programs
Become one with winter and learn to ice skate at the South Charleston Memorial Ice Arena, located next to Target at the Shops At Trace Fork. The ice arena staff is offering a number of programs for all ages.

Off the Record: ; Cry Panic and Let Slip the Shack Nasties
The holidays are barely over, the doldrums of January not yet descended, but my brother and I are already suffering the first signs of the "shack nasties," a phrase coined by some wag to describe a severe form of cabin fever caused by being cooped up inside for weeks on end. There's only one cure for the shack nasties: get outdoors as quickly as possible. When this isn't feasible, the best treatment is to spend hours planning to go outdoors.

Adopt a Pet: ; Kanawha-Charleston Humane Association Shelter:
Meet Abraham (ref. 8720), a 9-month-old, male, mixed-breed dog, and Franky (ref. 625), a 2-year-old, male cat. Abraham is housebroken and gets along well with children. He would make an excellent pet. Franky is a nice looking cat and would also make a nice pet.
Small Business Award Nominations Sought
The Small Business Development Center at Marshall Community and Technical College and its partner business groups are looking for a few good small businesses for its Small Business Awards. Award winners will be honored during Entrepreneurship Week 2008 at the end of February.
Outdoors: ; Dnr Reports 2007 Fall Wild Turkey Harvest Highest in Four Years
Preliminary harvest figures show a kill of 1,491 wild turkeys for the fall 2007 season. "This number should exceed 1,500 birds when the official count of game checking tags is tallied in early 2008," reported Paul R. Johansen, Assistant Chief of Game Management for the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources.
Students Earn First Business 'Black Belts'
Four individuals became the first students to complete the requirements to earn the Six Sigma Black Belt certification at West Virginia State Community and Technical College. This is the first group to complete both the Green Belt and Black Belt requirements at the community college since the program was initiated earlier this year.
