Division of Culture and History Names New Deputy Commissioner

Commissioner Randall Reid-Smith of the West Virginia Division of Culture and History announced that he has named Jacqueline A. Proctor deputy commissioner and communications manager of the agency, effective Jan. 16. Proctor replaces Ginny Painter, who resigned as deputy commissioner in December.

Lecture Series to Present California Artist Wednesday

The West Virginia Division of Culture and History will continue its Cultural Heritage Lecture Series with touring artist Cary Trivanovich and his presentation "The One Habit of Highly Affective Artists" on Wednesday, March 28, at 7 p.m., in the Norman L. Fagan West Virginia State Theater at the Cultural Center, State Capitol Complex, Charleston. The event is free and open to the public.

Library Offering Early Literacy Workshops

The Kanawha County Public Library system will host three free Early Literacy Workshops for those seeking credentials on the WV STARS career pathway. Each workshop counts for two clock hours in Core Knowledge Content Area 4-Curriculum.

Meet Prince (ref. 8890), a 1-year-old, male, neutered, mixed- breed dog, and Hank (ref. 9), a male cat (no age given). Prince is good with children and other animals, and he knows commands for "sit," "stay" and "speak." Hank is trained to use a litter box. He doesn't bite, and he has had his front claws removed.

Partnering with 16 corporations, foundations and individual donors, West Virginia Independent Colleges & Universities, Inc. recently announced recipients of the Circle of Vision Scholarship for 2006-07 at the University of Charleston. Capital Falls to Parkersburg, Ripley

Capital High Schools girls softball team took on Parkersburg and Ripley March 21 in a three-way double header at Capital. The visiting teams took both games from the Cougers, Parkersburg 15-2 and Ripley 10-2. The losses bring Capitals record to 0-4. Three games have been rained out so far this season. Capitals Allison Gardner makes contact with the ball during a game against Parkersburg on March 21.
