Off the Record: ; Football Season Carries Aura of Sorrow for Lost Mate

Aaaahh! It is fall! This is probably my favorite season of the year. Temperatures are mild during the day, cooler in the evenings, usually lots of sunshine, and it is a tempting time to be outdoors. The hot, humid days of summer get to me and I run South for the colder months. That leaves spring and fall, and I vote for fall, although I like spring, as well.

Readers Forum: ; Mining Mules Column Sparks Recollections of Childhood Coal Camp Days

I lived in a coal company house (Hatfield Campbells Creek Coal Company). The name of the town was Putney (named for the Putney family). Your story on mules brought back memories of my childhood. I recall a man named "Stump." He was trying to get the mule to go and he refused! So he kept whipping the mule over and over.
