Bass Tourney Winners Named: ; Late Area Fisherman Honored

Twenty-eight anglers participated in the seventh annual Upper Kanawha Valley Chamber of Commerce's Bass Tournament on Aug. 5 in Montgomery. The day started 4:30 a.m. with registration on Fourth Avenue in front of the former Montgomery High School.

Blood Drive Coming

The American Red Cross will be hosting the annual Save-a-Life Blood Drive on Thursday, Aug. 31. Red Cross representatives are urging Charleston residents and those in surrounding Kanawha and Putnam county communities to take some time out of their day to help hospital patients that need blood transfusions to help save their life.

Logan Museum Alters Operating Hours

The Museum in the Park at Chief Logan State Park is changing its hours for the fall season to 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday and 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday, beginning Wednesday, Sept. 6. The museum is closed Monday and Tuesday.

The West Virginia University Foundation's Band Aid Drive has surpassed $200,000, according to foundation officials. The goal of the drive is to raise $270,000 for 400 new uniforms for the WVU Marching Band by Sept.1.

Marshall Fans Invited to Sept. 2 Pre-Game Tailgating Near Wvu

Marshall University fans traveling to Morgantown on Saturday, Sept. 2 for the Thundering Herd's football game with West Virginia University are invited to a pre-game tailgate. Marshall is hosting a tailgate from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. at Krepps Park near the WVU Coliseum. Admission is $10 per person and includes food, drinks and giveaways.

Students Set for Challenge Graduation

Three local students were among 80 graduates recently at the Mountaineer Challenge Academy in Kingwood, Preston County. Cadet Nicholas Hershel Layne, the son of Jonathan and Angela Griffith of Charleston, was recognized for receiving the Cadre Distinction Award, as well as obtaining the first, second and third phase ribbons. He also participated in the Presidential Physical Fitness Program.

I was horrified to see the photo of children in cages on the front page of the Aug. 16 Metro Kanawha. Glancing down to read the article, my horror turned to anger and disgust as it became clear this was an advertisement. There was a story in the news several months ago about a couple who actually kept their children locked in wooden cages. Almost daily we read about the horrors of child abuse.

Alliance Aims to Keep Young Professionals in Valley

The Charleston Area Alliance Board of Directors wants these headlines to appear in local newspapers in 2010: "College graduates flock to Charleston region" and "Average age in West Virginia reaches 36." The Alliance, a local economic and community development group, charged the group's Business Development Committee at its 2006 strategic planning retreat to find ways to attract and keep young professionals in the region.

"Tread softly," my wife warned when I announced my intention to write a column about the upcoming football game between West Virginia University and Marshall. "Balderdash, Pish-tosh! I'm a grizzled, ink-stained newspaperman!" Kanawha Forum to Host Fall Luncheons, Concerts

The Kanawha Forum has released its fall schedule for Wednesday afternoon concerts and luncheons at Kanawha United Presbyterian Church, 1009 Virginia St. East in Charleston. The concert performances are free and begin at 12:05 p.m. in the church sanctuary. Luncheons follow in the fellowship hall and are available by prepaid reservation, costing $8 each.

Artist Fellowships Available

Applications are being accepted for Artist Fellowships through the West Virginia Commission on the Arts of the West Virginia Division of Culture and History. Applications must be postmarked by Sept. 1.
