Ballet Sponsors Valentine Raffle
The Charleston Ballet is sponsoring its third annual Valentine Package Raffle. The "Memories from the Heart" raffle will award a package of gift items and romantic experiences valued at more than $1,500. The prizes will be raffled on the air during WCHS TV-8's "Good Morning, West Virginia" on Friday, Feb. 10.
West Side School to Observe Catholic Schools Week
St. Anthony School on Charleston's West Side will celebrate Catholic Schools Week Monday, Jan. 30 through Friday, Feb. 3 with a series of events designed to celebrate its accomplishments and demonstrate the quality of education it provides. St. Anthony School serves families from Kanawha, Putnam, Clay, Lincoln, Boone, and Jackson counties. Those families come from a wide range of religious, ethnic, cultural, economic and educational backgrounds.

Thanks for the great column on the Ralston Rocket. You mentioned the green tube on the Zenith radio. That was the famous "magic eye" tuning device. As one got closer to the station's frequency, the eye "closed" in a magic kind of way. Very beautiful feature.
Off the Record: ; Snow Days and Surplus Cheese
Our principal at Cross Lanes Elementary School, Walter Moore, always wore a suit and tie and rubber bands wrapped around his left wrist. He had thinning hair and an authoritative, yet kind, presence. He was a nice man, especially to the poorer students who lived "up the hollow" a couple of miles or so from the school.

Wvu Press to Release Book Celebrating State Fiddle Music
The West Virginia University Press will release Erynn L. Marshall's "Music in the Air Somewhere: The Shifting Borders of West Virginia's Fiddle and Song Traditions" on Wednesday, March 1. The work illuminates the importance of fiddle music and folk traditions in West Virginia through oral histories taken from lifelong West Virginia musicians to demonstrate the uniqueness of the art.

Martin Luther King Jr. Award Winners Named
Nineteen young people, five individuals and three service organizations were honored Saturday, Jan. 14, with awards from the Martin Luther King, Jr., West Virginia Holiday Commission as part of the state's observance of the Martin Luther King holiday weekend. The awards ceremony was held during a private luncheon at the Cultural Center, State Capitol Complex in Charleston.
