Charlestonian Crowned Wvu Homecoming Queen
West Virginia University senior and Charleston resident Danielle Boyd was crowned the 2006 Homecoming Queen on Oct. 14. Along with Grant Stetz, named Homecoming King, Boyd was recognized at halftime of the WVU-Syracuse University football game at Milan Puskar Stadium in Morgantown.
Madison Downey, the daughter of Bill and Suzanne Downey of Shrewsbury, was crowned Miss DuPont at the Sept. 23 homecoming ceremonies at DuPont Middle School. Her extracurricular activities include varsity volleyball, cheerleading, track and All-County Chorus.
Scarecrows Standing Tall in Malden
A dozen scarecrows at Good Living Assisted Living in Malden have started what they hope will be a groundswell of creativity and imagination in their community in the coming years. Good Living Administrator Karen Glazier hopes that this example will spread and include other businesses and residents who have an itnerest in this "homemade" Halloween craft.
Charleston Ballet Opens Season Oct. 27
On Friday, Oct. 27, and Saturday, Oct. 28, at 8 p.m., the Charleston Ballet will present its season opener with "Country Moon," "Paquita" and "New Works" with the Montclaire String Quartet. Choreographed by Oleg Briansky, "Country Moon" is a ballet featuring the music of Patsy Cline, combining pointe shoes and cowboy boots.

Roark-Sullivan Lifeway Center Partner with Target to Sponsor Local Homelessness Programs
Roark-Sullivan Lifeway Center has announced a partnership with Target for the sponsorship of RAP and Life Skills groups. Both of these groups were held in the past at the Giltinan Center, a men's homeless shelter at 505 Leon Sullivan Way in Charleston, but were discontinued due to funding constraints.

West Virginia University and Marshall University will meet again this fall. However, this time there won't be a football involved. Instead, the fanfare is all part of the third author's luncheon for supporters of the libraries at Marshall and WVU.
Five Organizations Receive Arts Grants
At its Sept. 13 meeting, the West Virginia Commission on the Arts of the West Virginia Division of Culture and History awarded $323,300.25 to five West Virginia organizations through the Cultural Facilities and Capital Resources Grants Program. The program awards matching grants for construction, renovation or purchase of performance and exhibition spaces, and for purchase of equipment for these facilities. The grants are funded through proceeds from the West Virginia Lottery.

In recognition of National Physical Therapy Month, Charleston Area Medical Center Physical Therapy Departments are sponsoring the 14th annual Great Pumpkin Race on Saturday, Oct. 28 at Kanawha State Forest. The event includes a 5K run and three- and one-mile walks.
200-Plus to Present Multicultural Music Program Dec. 1
The River City Youth Ballet Ensemble, child Song, the award- winning Horace Mann Middle School Strings Ensemble, the West Virginia Youth Symphony Cadets and the First Baptist Choir will present "Around the World ... in About an Hour" on Friday, Dec. 1. Featuring more than 200 performing artists, "Around the World ... in About an Hour" will feature a staged hot air balloon tour of Africa, India, Ireland, England and France.
