Quilt Exhibition Opens at Cultural Center
The West Virginia Division of Culture and History's annual exhibition, "Quilts and Wall Hangings 2004," will be on display through Sept. 6. The exhibition features the juried work of 49 state quilters. It is located in the Great Hall of the Cultural Center in the state Capitol Complex, Charleston.

Elk Center to Host Aarp Medicare Program Tuesday
An informational session addressing the West Virginia Senior Medicare Information and Error Patrol Project is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 1 at the Elk River Community and Education Center. The project is a joint undertaking by the AARP Foundation and AARP West Virginia. It is funded in part by the U.S. Administration on Aging and is part of a national effort to combat and prevent error, waste, fraud and abuse in Medicare and Medicaid.

Cottman Transmission in Charleston has partnered with Mothers Against Drunk Driving in MADD's promotion of its new The Power of YOU program. Geared toward middle school-age students, The Power of YOU helps them to recognize their own personal power and build a strong sense of identity. Television journalist and commentator Tony Brown will appear at the Kanawha Institute for Social Research & Action Inc. benefit dinner Friday, June 4 in the Charleston Marriott. The event will run from 6 to 9 p.m. and will cost $50 per person or $500 a table. The revenue raised from the benefit will go towards the KISRA Empowerment Center Renovation Project.
Basketball Hall of Fame Recognizes Elks Free Throw Contest
The Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame and the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks inked a partnership agreement on April 22, recognizing the Elks Free Throw Contest. The partnership will give the Elks a home for their recognition of champions in their annual "Hoop Shoot Contest" for boys and girls ages 8 thru 13. Dupont Teacher Garners Golden Apple Award
Susan Duernberger of DuPont Middle School was one of 26 West Virginia teachers awarded Golden Apple Achiever certificates by Arch Coal in late April, according to John R. Snider, the company's vice president for external affairs, eastern region. Snider said the recipients are being honored for their outstanding classroom teaching. These awards follow Arch Coal's announcement in February of its 10 Arch Coal Teacher Achievement Award winners.
